This time of year, when August borders autumn, is the perfect season to whip up a batch of spiced fig jam to enjoy throughout the “‘ber” months. If you’re craving a spread for your toast that tastes like a spiced and gently sweet chai latte, look no further than this recipe. I love serving it on a slice of my toasted sourdough buttermilk bread or with scones and clotted cream—either way you will want to make a pot of tea to enjoy this treat with.

Does it matter what kinds of figs I use for spiced fig jam?
It does not matter what kinds of figs you use. Use whatever is ripe and available near you for best results. I picked mine from a local tree when they were starting to get really ripe and the jam turned out amazing.
How do I know when figs are ripe?
Each variety is a little bit different, but most figs get really soft when they’re ripe and pop off the tree easily. Some dark figs also turn this gorgeous deep purple color, but green figs get darker and softer. It’s helpful to find out what kind of figs you have so you know how to pick them for the best spiced fig jam results.
When are figs in season?
Figs ripen from July-September where I live (north east Georgia). You can research fig season in your zone for a more accurate range
Where can I find figs?
I don’t have a fig tree of my own, so I pick them from trees around my area. You can ask your neighbors if they mind you picking or find a neglected tree where the ripe fruit is clearly going to waste. I also like to use an app called iNaturalist to find local produce to forage.
