It’s such a cheap and easy treat to make for your cats, especially if you’re a baker with a few wheat berries on hand! In this blog, I’m going to teach you how to grow cat grass, why you should grow it, and where to buy the best quality wheat berries for kitties and bread alike.

It’s even easier than you think. I usually have hard white winter wheat on hand, but you can also use spring varieties, barley, rye, spelt, or even einkorn.

How to grow cat grass: instructions

  1. Fill a small pot, mug, bowl, or teacup with a quality organic soil or compost. You don’t need to worry about your pot having holes in it or not because it will only need a little bit of water.
  2. Add wheat berries to the soil; usually, a small handful is enough.
  3. Cover the wheat berries with a very thin layer of soil
  4. Place in a sunny window or outside (depending on your climate)
  5. Water lightly every day until you see sprouts
  6. Once you see sprouts, continue watering the grass when the soil feels a little dry
  7. The grass should be ready to eat within a week of sprouting
  8. You probably will want the grass to be at least finger length before feeding it to your cats

Tips for feeding cat grass to kitties

  • If you’ve never given your cat grass before, start with a small amount. If you give your cat too much grass, they will probably regurgitate it pretty quickly. To start, just give your cat one piece of grass a day and monitor their behavior.
  • Grass is really great for cats because it’s full of fiber and other nutrients they would not get from their pre-made food. You still don’t want to give your cats grass as a meal replacement because it’s too much fiber to be eaten in large quantities.
  • I like to give my cats grass as a treat. Usually, I require them to jump or reach for it as a little mobility exercise and challenge.

How to grow cat grass at home: tips

  • You can easily place the pot in the sink for quick watering, but I also like to keep a spray bottle with water in it to quickly hydrate the soil. This works really well if you are using a pot without drainage.
  • Depending on your climate, you can grow catgrass outside. I have winter wheat varieties in my pantry, so they grow well year-round in North Georgia, outside or inside.
  • To harvest your cat grass, you can cut it with scissors or pull it completely out of the soil seed.  If you cut it, the grass will continue to grow, which is great, but sometimes I like to pull it out because the cats like eating the wheat berry seeds too.

Where to buy wheat berries for growing cat grass

You can grab wheat berries at your local bulk or health food store but one of the best places to get them is from Azure Standard. I would definitely recommend their wheat berries for breadmaking as well. If you’re interested in milling your flour, check out my blog on the subject.

It’s important to use organic wheat berries that have not been sprayed with pesticides or other chemicals. We don’t want our cats or our bread to be contaminated!
